This oven was sitting next to a field well outside the city wall. We wondered if it was used for food or if it produced charcoal for sale in the town. In olden days Sukhothai was a center of pottery manufacturing and much was exported throughout Asia (especially to China). Pottery factories used much larger kilns than this but the designs were probably similar.
